DEACON'S MINISTRY:

"Likewise must the deacons be grave, not double tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; ...Holding the mystery of faith in a pure conscience...And let these also be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless."   I Timothy 3:8-10

Besides the office of Pastor, the only other office in the Church given scriptural authority is the office of the Deacon.  The purpose of the Deacon is to assist the Pastor in the administration of and leadership of the Church's mission.  Deacons are selected to enhamce the ministry of the Church.  Not only do they assist in the administering of the ordinances, but also in the visitation of the sick, and in keeping the Pastor informed of persons who may need the Pastor's care and direct follow-up.

In a Church the size of First African Baptist Church, the Deacon's duties are important to the life and health of the congregation.  The Deacons are also responsible for the care and well-being of the Pastro in terms of his material needs, and to see to it that he and his family are rightly taken care of, and adequately provided for.  They are also his spiritual support system.

The need for Trustees, although not scriptural, developed through the mandate of the State which requires all corporations to elect persons called Trustees to act on the Church's behalf in the transaction of business and in matters pertaining to property.  Trustees are managers of the Church's business affairs and can only act by and through the authority of the Church and direction of the Pastor.

The Trustees work in conert with the Pastor in the leadership of the Church.  No member of the Church has the authority to buy, purchase or sign in the Church's name without the approval of the Pastor and Trustee Chair.  Checks for salaries are written and bills are paid bimonthly.  Any ideas, observations and issues concerning the well-being of the Church's property should be forwarded to the Trustees.

The Trustees also keep an accurate record of membership giving of tithes and offerings as well as an active list of members, including proper addresses and phone numbers when possible.  Your address and phone number are private and the Church will not give out information that might disturb your right to privacy without your permission.  Be sure to register annually so that files will remain current and correct.
